Fiber
Optic Cleaning Sticks

Micro Care offers a whole family of sintered swabs optimized
for the fiber optic connector industry. Different sizes for
different connectors. These products are a superior answer for
cleaning fiber optic end-faces, and they out-perform competing
products because they put a lot of technology right at the
business end of the cleaning swab.
These
nibs are based on a unique, thermally-sintered polymer which
is molded, not hand-wound. This enables each stick to wick up
more contamination and trap more particulate than fabric-style
swabs (and with none of the drawbacks of foam-type swabs). The
tips have been specifically engineered to conform to connector
end-face surfaces including low-reflective angled connectors.
Packaged in convenient, color-coded travel kits, these sticks
deliver the highest rate of successful cleaning in the
industry, saving time and money.
The
cleaning sticks are designed to be a single-use, disposable
product. To use them, dampen (not soak) the tip of the
cleaning stick with Micro Care's Fiber Optic Connector Cleaner
II solvent (see above). Then, insert the cleaning stick into
the alignment sleeve and firmly twist the stick about 8-10
times. Always turn in the same direction. As you are spinning
the cleaning stick, gently pump it up and down. This pumping
motion enables the "active cleaning action" of the
sintered polymer material.
The
illustration demonstrates the active cleaning process. In the
illustration on the left, the cleaning stick is approaching
the connector end-face where a tiny piece of particulate is
sitting (red arrow). The tip of the cleaning sticks have
excellent dimensional stability and precision -- something
many other types of fiber optic cleaners cannot claim -- and
slide easily into the alignment sleeve.
As the user "pumps" the cleaning stick (indicated
by the green downward pointing arrow) the individual fibers in
the tip of the cleaning stick open and close (note the open
spaces indicated by the blue arrow). Some observers say the
gripping action resembles the manner in which the tread of a
radial tire grabs the road, opening and closing under the
rolling weight of the vehicle. Other people say it resembles a
cat's paw, which can open, close and grip objects tightly.
This lift-and-grab action enhances the natural capillary
suction of the open, porous nib.
This active cleaning process
creates voids in the nib which trap particulate and lifts it
away.
The
benefits of the Micro Care cleaning sticks are numerous. For
example, the molded design (as opposed to a foam stick or a
wrapped fabric stick) ensures a perfect fit with end-face and
alignment sleeves. Since the cleaning head of each FiberCare
stick is a single, fibrous material without glues or central
post, the cleaning heads conform very tightly to end-face
geometry (in the illustration, notice the head is wrapping
around the domed shape of the fiber). The
thermally-sintered polymer tip eliminates contamination from
fibers, glues, out-gassing or blowing agents. Because the tips
are molded, not wrapped, they offer excellent dimensional
stability for consistent and repeatable cleaning. Lastly,
because the nibs are narrower than the ferrule, the nib spins
off-center, providing more cleaning at the core of the fiber.
All
of these factors combine to make the Fiber Care cleaning sticks
the tool of choice for fiber optic installations and repairs
globally.
