In order to access all the traffic running across your network (Layer 1 - 7), you need to have access by "tapping" the network at critical points. Once deployed, the V-Line™ will continually check the health of the inline appliance with heartbeat packets injected into the traffic stream on one side of the appliance and checked and removed on the other side. The heartbeats follow a rigorous algorithm that is biased towards maximum network security by allowing traffic to flow through the inline appliance under high traffic and/or packet processing conditions.

If the inline appliance fails and is not passing traffic, then the V-Line™ hardware will detect the loss of the heartbeat and automatically bypass the inline appliance and allow traffic to flow along the network uninterrupted. The V-Line™ continues to send out the heartbeat testing connectivity of the inline appliance and if it recovers then the V-Line™ will immediately bring it back online.

In Line Deployment of Security Solutions

With many customers now deploying inline security devices there has proven to be a requirement for a complimentary product that offers additional protection for the many change control demands, as well as offering High Availability / Redundancy capabilities in this deployment scenario – Introducing the Network Critical V-Line™ TAP.
 

The V-Line™ provides complete failsafe protection for an inline appliance in one simple step; installed in place of the appliance the TAP continually checks the appliance network status and while it is online directs network traffic through it. If the appliance goes offline the TAP automatically bypasses it and traffic is directed straight through to the network devices. When the appliance comes online again traffic is immediately directed through it again.
 

This capability is vital for customers who want to deploy inline appliances on mission critical network segments but simply can’t afford the risk of unscheduled downtime or the costly dilemma of scheduled downtime for configuration changes, maintenance or repair scenarios.

In addition to the V-Line™ primary IPS Sensor ports, a secondary pair of inline appliance ports is provided. If the primary appliance fails and a secondary appliance is available, the V-Line™ will pass the network traffic through the secondary appliance therefore providing the High Availability / Redundancy that is not available on many inline appliances.

One of the key features of the V-Line™ is that when a customer is looking to deploy an inline appliance they only have to down the network once, thus greatly improving the ease of deployment and significantly reducing the associated costs. Without the V-Line™ the customer would have to first down the network for the initial deployment, down it again for maintenance or unforeseen issues and if this were the case, potentially down it a third time for re-deployment of the amended solution – The V-Line™ completely removes the need for this costly and disruptive process!
